The Influence of Social Embeddedness on Timing of Union Formation among the Turkish Second Generation in Seven European Countries

This paper studies the extent to which the timing of union formation of second-generation Turks is influenced by their family and their contacts within non-coethnic networks. Both groups of social actors are likely to offer the second generation different views on union formation. Extending on previous research, which showed the importance of close non-coethnic friends, we control for the influence of both groups. Additionally, we test the influence of the country context that the second generation experiences in different receiving countries, because this may offer different constraints and possibilities. We use data from The integration of the European second generation (TIES) survey for Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Each survey has a sample of 250 to 500 second-generation Turks aged 18-35.
