Social Relationships and Biomarkers of Metabolic Syndrome: Analyses from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Yumiko Kamiya, Trinity College Dublin

Cardiovascular disease is the leading causes of mortality across the developed countries. Lack of social integration has predicted coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality in both clinical and population studies; however, the biological mechanisms by which this may occur are not well understood. The aim of this study is to determine whether social integration is associated with the metabolic risk factors (SBP, DBP, HDL, total cholesterol, HBA1c, and abdominal obesity (WHR)) using the English Longitudinal Survey of Ageing (ELSA) data. This paper will contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms or pathways that associate social engagement to morbidity and mortality.
